Description

For singers, rappers, and musicians who need a large-diaphragm studio condenser microphone and do not have the budget for higher-end models, the TASCAM TM-80 offers a practical solution. Since it shares design characteristics with more expensive microphones and has no switches to configure, it provides a combination of quality and ease of use, making it ideal for home recording setups. The microphone package also includes a shockmount, tabletop tripod stand, and microphone cable, making the TM-80 a complete recording solution.

At the core of the microphone is its 0.7″ aluminum-diaphragm condenser capsule, which produces a higher output level and wider frequency range than most dynamic microphones. It can be used for vocals, acoustic instruments, and even guitar or bass amplifier cabinets. Thanks to its cardioid polar pattern, the TM-80 captures less room sound and background noise compared to the omnidirectional microphones commonly found in computers and mobile devices.

For proper operation, the TM-80 must be connected to the XLR input of a device capable of supplying phantom power.

For Vocal and Instrument Recording

The TM-80 provides a strong output signal and full-spectrum tone, allowing it to reproduce vocals (spoken or sung) and instruments with clarity. Its high sensitivity and 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response deliver a broader sonic range than typical handheld dynamic microphones, requiring less gain. With a maximum SPL of 136 dB, it can also be used for guitar cabinets and certain drum miking applications.

Friendly for Home Recording Setups

Unlike the microphones built into computers and smartphones that capture sound from all directions, the TM-80’s cardioid condenser element reduces sound coming from behind the microphone. This behavior helps minimize room reflections and ambient noise, which is especially beneficial in recording environments without acoustic treatment.

Phantom Power Required

The TM-80 requires phantom power between 9 and 48 VDC to operate. Therefore, it must be connected to an audio interface, mixer, or microphone preamp capable of supplying phantom power. The microphone is designed to connect directly to an XLR microphone input, rather than a computer soundcard or mobile device.

Shock-Absorbing Mount

When mounted in the included shockmount, the TM-80 is isolated from vibrations and low-frequency rumble that might travel through the microphone stand. The included mini tripod allows convenient tabletop placement, while the shockmount can also be attached to a standard microphone stand for standing use or overhead instrument recording.
