As part of the renowned Art series, it features a sophisticated optical design with three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements and four aspherical elements to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, as well as color fringing, distortion, and other optical imperfections for enhanced clarity and sharpness. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to minimize lens flare and ghosting, ensuring accurate color reproduction and high contrast, while a protective coating on the front element enhances durability in demanding conditions. The constant f/2.8 maximum aperture provides consistent performance throughout the zoom range and greater control over depth of field.

Complementing the optical performance, the lens is equipped with a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) for fast, smooth, and quiet autofocus with full-time manual focus override.
