Cinematic Capture in a Compact, Streamlined Form

With a compact design tailored for solo shooters, travel productions, or use as an ideal B camera, the Sony FX3A blends technologies from the Cinema Line and Alpha series to create a highly optimized portable cinema camera.

The FX3A includes all the imaging capabilities expected from this class of camera while introducing a lightweight handheld design with a streamlined profile and a cage-free body, allowing accessories to be mounted directly onto the camera.

Firmware Update v2.00

Firmware update v2.00 introduces multiple improvements, including:

  • BIG6 home screen for quick review of shooting settings and configurations
  • 1.5x and 1.6x De-Squeeze Display magnification
  • Support for Focus Magnifier and Auto Magnifier in MF settings while using Bright Monitoring
  • RAW video output via HDMI enabling Blackmagic RAW recording
  • Automatic recognition of a USB-LAN conversion adapter
  • Image filtering for smartphone and FTP transfers
  • Recording ND filter optical density metadata

Expressive UHD 4K Video Capture

The FX3A’s 12.1MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor (10.2MP effective in video mode) paired with the BIONZ XR processor enables UHD 4K video recording with internal 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling or 16-bit RAW output.

The sensor’s back-illuminated structure improves sensitivity and clarity, offering an expanded ISO range of 80–409,600 and 15+ stops of dynamic range, ideal for mixed lighting environments.

The S-Cinetone color profile allows seamless color matching with VENICE, FX9, and FX6 cameras, while support for S-Log3, S-Log2, S-Gamut3, S-Gamut3.Cine, and 10-bit HLG HDR enables flexible color grading and HDR workflows.

The sensor and processor combination also reduces rolling shutter, while Fast Hybrid AF ensures quick and intelligent subject tracking.

Full-Frame Exmor R CMOS Sensor

The 12.1MP Exmor R full-frame sensor combined with the BIONZ XR processor delivers cinematic imagery with 10.2MP effective resolution for video and 12.1MP for stills.

The full-frame design provides:

  • shallow depth of field
  • cinematic bokeh
  • reduced rolling shutter artifacts

The native ISO range of 80–102,400, expandable to 409,600, enables exceptional low-light performance.

With 15+ stops of dynamic range, the camera captures detail in both bright highlights and deep shadows, providing flexibility for color grading.

S-Cinetone Color

The S-Cinetone color profile, the default setting on the FX3A, produces:

  • natural skin tones
  • soft cinematic color rendering
  • seamless matching with VENICE, FX9, and FX6 footage

Support for S-Log3, S-Gamut3, S-Gamut3.Cine, and 10-bit 4:2:2 recording preserves smooth tonal gradations across Sony’s Cinema Line ecosystem.

The HLG HDR mode allows HDR playback without requiring color grading.

Video Recording

The FX3A captures highly detailed footage at:

  • 4K up to 120p
  • HD up to 240p
  • up to 5x slow motion at 24p output

Additional recording options include:

  • 16-bit RAW HDMI output to external recorders
  • simultaneous recording of XAVC 4K and proxy files

Internal recording supports 4:2:2 10-bit color using All-Intra and Long GOP codecs.

A silent cooling fan and internal heat sink allow continuous recording up to 4K60 without overheating.

Dual card slots support CFexpress Type A and SDXC cards for relay or backup recording.
