Canon C70 with RF Mount Overview: Cinematic Capture in a Mirrorless RF Mount Form Factor
Incorporating key Cinema EOS video tools into a mirrorless-style body, the Canon EOS C70 camera features a Super35 DGO (Dual Gain Output) sensor to capture nuanced images with more than 16 stops of high dynamic range. The EOS C70 is the first Cinema EOS camera with an RF mount that allows the use of Canon’s RF lens lineup, fast and reliable, with advanced coatings and image stabilization. The innovative DGO system combines two separate gain readings for each photodiode on the sensor, emphasizing saturation in bright areas of the image while reducing noise in darker areas.
Video resolutions include DCI 4K capture at frame rates ranging from 23.98 to 60 fps, along with high-speed options up to 120 fps in UHD 4K and 180 fps in cropped 2K. Professional video features include unlimited recording, Dual Pixel CMOS AF autofocus control, a motorized ND filter wheel integrated into the short flange distance of the RF mount, a BNC timecode input/output connector, and dual built-in mini-XLR audio inputs.
Exceptional Image Quality
DGO Sensor
Canon Super35 Dual Gain Output (DGO) Sensor
Canon’s next-generation Super35 Dual Gain Output (DGO) sensor delivers more than 16 stops of dynamic range and includes Canon’s proprietary Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus technology. The DGO sensor generates high dynamic range and maintains low noise levels by reading each pixel with different gains. It combines images using pixels captured with an amplifier that prioritizes saturation for bright areas and an amplifier that prioritizes low noise for darker areas.
DIG!C DV7 Image Processor
Canon’s DIG!C DV7 image processor takes the extensive raw information captured from the image sensor and processes it for output. The DIG!C engine also powers features such as high frame rate recording, the DGO sensor, Dual Pixel autofocus, HDR (PQ) output, electronic image stabilization, and proxy recording.
Canon Log 2 and 3; PQ and HLG Recording
The EOS C70 supports both the full dynamic range of Canon Log 2 as well as the more workflow-friendly Canon Log 3. Canon Log formats are designed to reproduce the entire tonal range of the CMOS sensor. Use a log workflow in post-production when seeking greater dynamic range, improved highlight and shadow retention, and greater grading flexibility. Note that while Canon Log 2 provides the greatest dynamic range and image detail, it will typically require more time for color correction.
For users seeking most of the benefits of a log workflow with faster turnaround time, Canon Log 3 offers an alternative with a slightly reduced dynamic range of 14 stops.
Highly Adaptable Shooting Style: RF Mount. EF Lens Compatibility with Optional Adapter
To provide greater flexibility in lens choice, the EOS C70 camera is also compatible with the EF-EOS R 0.71X adapter, available separately. This adapter converts full-frame lenses to the Super35 format and also provides approximately a one-stop increase in aperture. The EF adapter transmits lens data through the RF mount, providing full Dual Pixel autofocus and metadata information for selected lenses.
Additional compatible adapters include Canon Mount EF-EOS R, Canon Control Ring Mount, Drop-In Circular Polarizer Filter Mount, and Drop-In Variable ND Filter Mount.
Direct Touch Control
The EOS C70 features Direct Touch Control, allowing you to quickly and easily access your favorite menu settings through the fully articulating LCD screen. Simply tap the 3.5″ screen to start/stop recording, adjust ISO/Gain, color temperature, and iris, as well as access other critical settings. Recording settings located across different menus can now be controlled with one hand, allowing instant changes even when operating the camera single-handedly.
Vertical 9 x 16 Capture
Use the 1/4″-20 tripod thread integrated into the grip to position the EOS C70 for vertical use when capturing images for digital signage or mobile devices. For easier viewing, the user interface can also be adjusted for vertical use.
Professional Design Features
An integrated RF lens mount ensures compatibility of the EOS C70 with Canon’s growing line of high-performance RF-mount lenses.
With a short flange distance, the RF mount helps significantly reduce the depth of the camera body, resulting in a more compact design.
Compact Design
The compact EOS C70 features a lightweight design with an integrated ergonomic grip. This smaller EOS body includes two top shoes and comes with a removable handle and microphone holder.
Mini-XLR Audio Inputs
Two mini-XLR inputs with phantom power and manual controls provide professional audio recording options for the EOS C70
The EOS C70 supports up to 4 channels of audio using dual mini-XLR ports, an internal stereo microphone, and a 3.5 mm microphone input
Built-In ND Filters
Designed specifically for the short flange distance of the EOS C70, a slim motorized ND filter unit allows quick selection of up to 10 stops of neutral density — a feature especially useful for ENG operators or when shooting in rapidly changing lighting conditions.
Timecode Input/Output
A BNC connector on the front of the EOS C70 allows timecode input and output, making synchronization easier in multicamera shoots.
Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus with Touch AF and Face Detection
Another innovative feature of the EOS C70 is Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, which uses every pixel on the CMOS sensor for both focus detection and image information, resulting in accurate focus and optimal image quality. The EOS C70 is also the first Cinema EOS camera to feature the EOS iTR AF X autofocus function with a head detection algorithm developed using deep learning technology.
In face detection mode, this algorithm helps improve distance measurement and tracking reliability even when the subject turns their head to the side or away.
The EOS C70 also features the innovative Dual Pixel Focus Guide, which provides front and back focus information to indicate where to adjust focus during manual focusing.
Stabilization
EIS with Coordinated Control
To smooth handheld shooting, the EOS C70 is the first Cinema EOS camera to offer enhanced image stabilization with coordinated control. When used with an RF lens and the EOS C70’s electronic IS, coordinated control optimizes shake correction for even greater vibration reduction than that achieved with EF lenses and electronic IS.
When working in 2K format, the EOS C70’s Super16 Digital IS improves performance by using the peripheral area around the center of the 4K sensor to stabilize the image.
Automatic ISO/Gain Control
In another first for the Cinema EOS line, the EOS C70 can automatically adjust ISO and gain control using DGO (dual gain output) to smoothly change gain, allowing users to focus on framing rather than aperture control when moving between locations with significant lighting changes.
RC-V100 Support and LANC Compatibility
The LANC remote terminal on the EOS C70 body allows remote control using the optional Canon RC-V100 unit. The RC-V100 provides full access to key functions such as start/stop, shutter/gain adjustments, focus/iris/zoom settings, display settings, white balance, black gamma, and more.
Advanced Workflow Optimization
Card Formats
Dual SD card slots allow simultaneous recording in different formats, including 4K/HD and XF-AVC/MP4 options. The EOS C70 can also capture still images while in standby in selected video modes.
Standard and High Frame Rates up to 4K 120p
With its new chip design and DIG!C DV7 processor, the EOS C70 is capable of operating at both standard frame rates from 23.98 to 60 fps and ultra-high frame rates. Capture video at up to 120 fps in 4K and up to 180 fps in 2K crop mode. Dual Pixel AF is supported even at high frame rates, maintaining focus even when used with a gimbal or drone.
Log2/3 and LUT Cube Support
For greater flexibility in post-production, this camera also offers Canon Log 2 and Log 3 modes, both providing expanded dynamic range with excellent tonal reproduction for highlights and low-light areas. The EOS C70 also supports 3D .cube LUTs for more accurate color reproduction on both the LCD and external monitors.
4K/2K Long GOP Support
The EOS C70 supports more efficient Long GOP compression for longer recording times at rates up to 4K60p. Long GOP interframe compression detects differences between frames based on previous and subsequent frames.
