For filmmaking, television, and web broadcast applications where you want to record direct sound and ambience, the TASCAM DR-70D multi-track field recorder is an ideal companion for your DSLR. Capture up to four tracks of high-resolution audio from external sources and the onboard omnidirectional microphones, route audio to and from your camera, and conveniently monitor through headphones. With strap-friendly handles, a tripod mounting socket, and a camera-mount screw attachment, the DR-70D is compatible with a variety of setups and working styles.
Versatile powering methods and remote-control options make the DR-70D ideal for location recording and extended video shoots. Its four balanced XLR-1/4″ combo inputs handle mic- or line-level signals (even +4 dBu from high-end sound mixers) and can independently supply phantom power. A 3.5mm mic/line input with selectable plug-in power is provided for situations that require you to record a lavalier microphone or the output of a wireless receiver. Utilize settings such as stereo safety track recording, limiting, and low-cut filtering to achieve a clean, undistorted recording.
The DR-70D’s two onboard condenser microphones allow you to capture stereo sound without external microphones. The omnidirectional mics respond to sound from all directions and are permanently spaced apart in an A/B configuration, producing a wide, sphere-like pickup pattern.
Use them in combination with a shotgun, handheld, or lavalier microphone to record direct sound and ambience simultaneously.
Four locking XLR-1/4″ TRS combo jacks support mic level and +4 dBu line level, allowing you to record external microphones or balanced outputs from a professional multichannel mixer.
With individually switchable 24V or 48V phantom power and up to 63 dB of gain, the low-noise HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) mic preamps can support a wide variety of microphones such as dynamic, ribbon, or condenser types.
For maximum intelligibility and optimal vocal tone, recordists often prefer using lavalier microphones that can be attached to a subject’s clothing.
The 3.5mm mini-jack input on the DR-70D is designed specifically for this purpose. Clip a lavalier mic (available separately) onto the subject and connect it to the recorder.
Because many lavalier microphones require a small voltage known as plug-in power, TASCAM provides a selectable setting to supply it through the 3.5mm input.
If you need to record the output from a wireless microphone receiver or an audio mixer, the input also supports line-level signals up to +10 dBV.
The DR-70D features two 3.5mm outputs for simultaneous connection to your camera and headphones.
The headphone output includes a dedicated volume control, while the camera/line output level can be adjusted within the menu system.
Additionally, the side-panel 3.5mm camera input allows simple monitoring of playback from your camera.
To maintain compact size and portability, the DR-70D records directly to SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards up to 128GB.
With an 8GB card, the DR-70D can record stereo audio for over 13 hours at 16-bit / 44.1 kHz using the uncompressed BWF-compliant WAV format.
Using four AA alkaline batteries, the DR-70D can operate for:
Up to 6 hours of stereo recording at 16-bit / 44.1 kHz using external inputs
Up to 11 hours using the onboard microphones
For extended recording sessions, the DR-70D can also be powered via:
USB connection to a computer or mobile battery
Optional BP-6AA battery pack
TASCAM PS-P515U AC adapter (sold separately)
The DR-70D can be placed between a DSLR camera and a tripod, or mounted to a cage or follow-focus rig.
Features include:
Tripod socket on the bottom
Removable tripod bracket on the top
Integrated hot shoe when the bracket is removed
Front handles protect the screen and allow attachment of a shoulder strap.
All batteries can be replaced without removing the DR-70D from the camera or rig.
If you need to operate the transport or slate buttons while recording, the DR-70D’s soft-touch rubber keys ensure quiet operation and minimize handling noise.
Filmmakers often encounter sudden audio spikes during recording. The DR-70D includes a dual-recording mode that captures a duplicate recording up to 12 dB lower (adjustable in 1 dB increments) as a safety track in case of distortion.
Enhance the sound quality of your recordings with the DR-70D’s built-in mixer.
Each input includes controls for:
Panning
Level
Limiting
Polarity
Up to 150 ms of delay
The low-cut filter can be set to 40, 80, 120, 180, or 220 Hz to reduce wind noise and low-frequency rumble.
An internal tone generator simplifies synchronization between recordings from the DR-70D and your camera.
Using the slate tone function, an audible tone is sent to both the camera and the DR-70D. These tones can later be used as reference points in video editing software.
Slate tones can be generated:
Automatically at the start or start and end of each clip
Manually using the slate button
Playback can also jump directly to the slate position using the data dial.
The DR-70D can be controlled remotely using:
RC-3F footswitch
RC-10 wired remote
(both sold separately)
These allow you to start/stop recording, mark positions, increment tracks, and more without touching the recorder.
Angled 128 × 64 pixel graphic LCD with backlight for easy viewing
Simple file transfer via USB 2.0 connection
Adjustable delay function to compensate for distance differences between sound sources
Hold switch to prevent accidental operation
MS decoding function for proper stereo monitoring of mid-side microphone configurations
Automatically creates a new file when the maximum file size is reached
Resume function retains the last stop point even when the recorder is powered off and on again
Track increment function allows splitting recordings into new files
File name format can use a user-defined word or the date
The first six characters of the file name can be customized
