For filmmaking, television, and web broadcast applications, the TASCAM DR-60DmkII multitrack field recorder is an ideal companion for your DSLR. Capture up to four tracks of high-resolution audio from external sources, route audio to and from your camera, and conveniently monitor through headphones. With strap-friendly handles, a tripod mounting socket, and a camera-mount screw attachment, the DR-60DmkII is compatible with a variety of setups and working styles.
Versatile powering methods and remote-control options make the DR-60DmkII ideal for location recording and extended video shoots. Its two balanced XLR-1/4″ combo inputs handle mic- or line-level signals (even +4 dBu from high-end sound mixers) and can independently supply phantom power. A 3.5mm mic/line input with selectable plug-in power is provided for situations that require you to record a lavalier microphone or the output of a wireless receiver. Utilize modes such as stereo safety track recording, peak reduction, limiting, and auto level to achieve a clean, undistorted recording.
Dual locking XLR-1/4″ TRS combo jacks support mic level and +4 dBu line level, allowing you to record external microphones or balanced outputs from a professional multichannel mixer. With individually switchable phantom power (24V or 48V) and up to 64 dB of gain, the low-noise HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) mic preamps can serve a variety of microphones such as dynamic, ribbon, or condenser types.
For maximum intelligibility and optimal vocal tone, recordists often prefer to use lavalier microphones attached to their subject’s clothing. The DR-60DmkII’s 3.5mm mini-jack input is designed precisely for that situation; clip a lav mic (available separately) to the talent, then plug it into the recorder.
Since many lavalier microphones require a small amount of voltage known as plug-in power, TASCAM provides a selectable setting to supply plug-in power to the 3.5mm input. The input also supports mono and stereo signals, accepts line-level sources, and handles a maximum input level of +10 dBV, making it suitable for wireless receivers or mixers.
The DR-60DmkII includes three 3.5mm outputs for simultaneous connection to your camera, a secondary recorder, and headphones. Each output corresponds to a specific level — mic, line, or headphone — and includes independent volume control for efficient level management. The side-panel camera input also allows convenient monitoring of camera playback.
To maximize portability and reduce size, the DR-60DmkII records directly to SD and SDHC cards (up to 32GB). This allows extended recording times in both standard and high-resolution formats.
With an 8GB card, the recorder can capture over 13 hours of stereo audio at 16-bit / 44.1 kHz using the uncompressed BWF-compliant WAV format.
Using four AA alkaline batteries, the DR-60DmkII can operate for up to 4.5 hours of stereo recording at 16-bit / 44.1 kHz.
For extended recording sessions, the unit can also be powered via USB connection to a computer or mobile battery, through the optional BP-6AA battery pack, or using the TASCAM PS-P515U AC adapter.
The DR-60DmkII features a rigid plastic body designed to be both lightweight and durable. Measuring only 5.25 inches wide, it will not interfere with camera operation. Batteries can be replaced without removing the unit from the camera or tripod.
The recorder can be mounted between a DSLR camera and tripod, or attached to a cage or follow-focus rig. A tripod socket is located on the bottom, while a removable tripod bracket sits on the top. Side handles also protect the display and allow the attachment of a shoulder strap.
The soft-touch rubber keys allow quiet operation during recording, preventing handling noise from being captured in the audio.
Unexpected audio peaks often occur during filming. The DR-60DmkII includes dual-recording mode, which captures a second copy of the recording at a lower level to serve as a safety track in case of distortion.
The DR-60DmkII includes built-in level control and signal processing tools. Automatic level control adjusts recording volume when signals are too quiet or too loud. A limiter compresses signals before distortion occurs.
The peak reduction function automatically adjusts input gain during rehearsal or recording.
To reduce wind noise and low-frequency rumble, a low-cut filter can be set at 40, 80, or 120 Hz. During playback, treble, mid, and bass frequencies can be adjusted for customized sound.
Several recording functions simplify workflow. The pre-record function captures up to two seconds of audio before the record button is pressed.
The auto-record function can start recording automatically when the signal reaches -6, -12, -24, or -48 dB.
A self-timer mode allows recording to begin automatically after 2 or 10 seconds, useful for solo recordings.
An internal tone generator allows easy synchronization between recordings made on the DR-60DmkII and the camera. The slate tone can be recorded on both devices to serve as a reference during video editing.
Slate tones may be generated automatically at the beginning (or beginning and end) of each clip, or manually via the slate button.
Remote operation is available via the RC-3F footswitch or RC-10 wired remote (sold separately), allowing users to start/stop recording, add markers, increment tracks, and more without touching the recorder.
